Family Photography FAQs: Everything you need to know about your planning your photo session

Planning a family photography session can feel overwhelming. Where should it take place? What should everyone wear? How do you get genuine smiles from reluctant teenagers or energetic toddlers? As a Berkshire-based family photographer with over 20 years of experience, I’m here to make your family photo shoot as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

Before Your Session

How far in advance should I book my family photo shoot?

For the best selection of dates and seasonal locations, I recommend booking 3-4 weeks in advance. Popular times like autumn (for golden leaves) and spring (for bluebells) tend to fill quickly, especially weekends.

What locations do you offer for family photography sessions?

I specialise in outdoor location photography across Berkshire and surrounding areas, including Windsor Great Park, Virginia Water, I have a found a gorgeous spot for golden hour shoots, a bluebell wood and wild meadow. Each location is carefully chosen the style and the aesthetic you’re hoping to achieve.

I help families throughout Ascot, Windsor, Sunningdale, Wokingham, Maidenhead, Marlow, Henley, and Richmond, and I’m delighted to travel further afield within the UK or abroad for bespoke commissions. During our pre-shoot call, we’ll discuss locations that will best suit your vision—whether that’s a stately woodland setting, a sun-dappled meadow, or somewhere meaningful to your family.

Can we do the photo shoot at our home?

Absolutely. Home sessions offer a lovely alternative, particularly for families with very young children or those who want to capture their family in their natural environment. Your garden, if it has good natural light and space, can provide a beautiful, personal backdrop. We’ll discuss the best rooms and outdoor areas during our planning conversation.

What’s the best time of day for family photography?

The golden hour—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—offers the most beautiful, flattering natural light. For family sessions, I typically recommend late afternoon shoots, around 1-2 hours before sunset, when the light is soft and warm. However, I work with natural light throughout the day and can create lovely images regardless of timings through the day.

What should we wear for our family photo shoot?

Coordinated, not matching, is the key to contemporary family photography. Choose a colour palette of 2-3 complementary colours and vary the tones and textures. Neutral tones with one or two accent colours photograph beautifully and remain timeless.

Avoid busy patterns, large logos, or bright neons which can distract from faces. Layers add visual interest—think cardigans, scarves, or blazers. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in, as this translates beautifully on camera.

How long does a typical family photo session last?

Session lengths vary depending on the package you choose. My Mini Story sessions are 30 minutes—perfect for smaller families or those wanting a quick update to their portraits. The Story (1 hour) is my most popular package, offering ample time to capture a variety of poses and candid moments. For larger family groups or those wanting extended time, The Family Story provides 2 hours, allowing for multiple location spots and outfit changes if desired.

Working with Children

My children won’t sit still for photos. Can you still photograph them?

This is precisely my specialty! I don’t ask children to sit still or say cheese. Instead, I create a fun, playful environment where children can be themselves. We’ll play games, explore nature, run through fields, and let genuine moments unfold. The best photographs happen when children are engaged and enjoying themselves, not when they’re forced to pose.

I’ve been photographing families along time and I am a parent, your shoot will feel more like a family adventure than a formal photo session.

What if my toddler has a meltdown during the session?

Toddler meltdowns are completely normal, and I’ve seen it all! We’ll take breaks when needed, bring along favourite snacks or comfort items, and we will adjust our approach. Sometimes the most authentic, tender moments happen during these real-life situations. I build flexibility into every session, so there’s no pressure or stress if little ones need a moment.

Can you photograph newborns and babies in an outdoor setting?

Yes, though I recommend outdoor family sessions when baby is at least 3-4 months old and can hold their head up comfortably. For younger newborns, a home session often works better, where we can control the environment and keep baby comfortable and warm. We’ll time the session around baby’s feeding and sleep schedule for the best results.

The Photography Experience

What makes your approach to family photography different?

My philosophy centres on authentic storytelling rather than stiff, posed portraits. I document the connections between family members—the way your daughter holds your hand, how your son makes everyone laugh, the glances between partners. These are the moments you’ll love in 20 years.

Do you provide direction during the shoot, or is it completely candid?

  • It’s a balanced approach. I provide gentle guidance and prompts that encourage natural interaction—”walk towards me as a family,” “whisper something funny to your child,” “show me how you cuddle.” This creates authentic moments while ensuring we capture the variety of images you’ll want.
  • I’m not asking you to hold uncomfortable poses for extended periods. Instead, we’re creating scenarios where genuine emotion and connection can emerge naturally.

What happens if the weather is poor on our shoot date?

British weather is wonderfully unpredictable! Light rain can create atmospheric, magical photographs, and I always come prepared with solutions. However, if conditions are genuinely unsuitable (heavy rain, high winds, or unsafe weather), we’ll reschedule to a mutually convenient date at no additional charge. I monitor weather forecasts closely and will communicate with you in advance if we need to make changes.

Do you include pets in family photography sessions?

Absolutely! Pets are family members too. I offer a dedicated Pet Story package, and dogs (or other pets) are welcome in all family sessions. I’ll work with your pet’s temperament and energy level to capture them naturally within your family dynamic. Just let me know in advance so I can plan accordingly.

After Your Session

How long until we receive our photographs?

You’ll receive your online gallery within 2-3 weeks of your session. I personally edit every image to ensure it meets my quality standards and reflects my artistic vision. Your gallery will be beautifully presented and easy to share with family and friends.

How many photographs will we receive?

This depends on your chosen package. Mini Story includes 3 professionally edited digital images, The Story includes 10, and The Family Story includes 10. However, I always capture far more images than this during your session. Additional images are available for purchase through your online gallery, and many families choose to add more favourites.

Can we print the digital images ourselves?

Yes, all digital images come with a personal print release, allowing you to print for personal use. However, I strongly encourage clients to order professional prints through me. The quality difference is significant—professional prints are colour-corrected specifically for each image and use archival-quality papers and inks that will last generations.

What print and product options do you offer?

I offer a c selection of luxury print products designed to showcase your images beautifully. Options include museum-quality prints in various sizes, bespoke linen print boxes with matching prints, folio frames, and elegant desktop frames. Each product is carefully selected for its quality and timeless aesthetic.

I can also arrange bespoke framing for specific interior design needs, particularly for clients wanting gallery walls or statement pieces for their homes.

Do you offer wall art consultation?

Yes, for clients investing in larger prints or multiple pieces, I’m happy to provide guidance on sizing, placement, and creating cohesive gallery walls. I want you to feel confident that your artwork will look stunning in your home and complement your interior design.

Practical Details

What’s included in the session fee?

Your session fee covers my time, expertise, travel within 30 minutes of Ascot, location scouting and planning, the photography session itself, professional editing of all delivered images, and your online gallery. Digital images and print products are selected and purchased separately, allowing you to choose exactly what you love most.

Do you require a deposit to secure our date?

Yes, a deposit is required to officially reserve your session date on my calendar. This ensures you have that specific time slot protected, particularly during popular seasons. The remaining balance is due on the day of your session, with print and product orders placed afterward through your online gallery.

What if we need to reschedule our session?

Life happens—I understand! If you need to reschedule, please provide at least 48 hours notice and we’ll find a new date that works for everyone. Last-minute cancellations or no-shows (except in genuine emergencies) may result in forfeiture of your deposit, as that time was reserved exclusively for you.

Are extended family or multi-generational sessions possible?

Absolutely, and these are some of my favourite sessions to photograph! Multi-generational photographs become increasingly precious over time. For larger groups (more than 6 people), I recommend The Family Story package which provides adequate time to capture both the full group and smaller family units within it. We can discuss your specific needs during our consultation.

Do you photograph family events like reunions or milestone celebrations?

Yes, I’m available for private family events, reunions, milestone birthdays, or celebrations. These bookings are quoted individually based on the scope, duration, and deliverables you require. Please reach out to discuss your specific needs and I’ll create a bespoke package for you.
